About Old Billingsgate Market

date:1875

architect:Horace Jones

style:

period:

The current building on the site dates from 1877 and was designed by Sir Horace Jones. The building has a cast iron frame which allows from an open interior as is required for a market. The exterior is Renaissance in style. Until 1850 there was no actual market building, then one was built, but it quickly proved inadequate. The current build was commissioned to replace it.

There has been a market on this site since at least 1016, probably much earlier. In 1016 the first recorded toll regulations were issued. At this time it was not solely a fish market, all kinds of provisions were traded. In 1698 an act of parliament was passed that made Billingsgate "a free and open market for all sorts of fish", the purpose was to brake the monopoly of a group of fishmongers.

The site become ever less practicable for a market, being in the middle of the City, so in 1982 the fish market was relocated to the Isle of Dogs near to Docklands, and the building converted into offices.
